Shiatsu Therapy

Registered Shiatsu Therapist Brenda Novoa (RPT, RYT, RST)

Shiatsu is a style of massage originating in Japan, based on traditional Asian healing principles and modern anatomy and physiology theory. Shiatsu consists primarily of pressure applied to the acupuncure meridians and points of the body. Therefore Shiatsu is sometimes referred to as “acupuncture without needles”. In addition to pressure point therapy, Shiatsu also employs other various manipulative techniques such as joint mobilization to increase range of motion within the joint, and the manipulation of muscles and other soft tissues to reduce tension and adhesions (scar tissue).

Passive stretching techniques help to promote flexibility and when used with the client’s resistance can help to strengthen and align the body. This deep, yet gentle approach to preventative healthcare can have many long term effects.

How can Shiatsu benefit me?

  • Stress and tension relief
  • Improved digestion
  • Back and neck pain relief
  • Relief from general stiffness
  • Headaches/Migraine relief
  • Improved circulation
  • Relaxation

Registered Shiatsu Therapist in Coquitlam/Vancouver areaWhat takes place during a Shiatsu Therapy treatment?

Shiatsu treatments take place in a safe comfortable environment, which promotes relaxation. Your therapist uses a massage table, or futon, or massage chair for those who have difficulty laying down. The client is clothed (light, loose clothing is preferred), and no oils or creams are used. Pressure is applied within the client’s comfort zone, using palms, fingers, thumbs, and elbows are used for deeper pressure. The pressure may be held for longer or shorter periods of time, depending on the condition. Passive stretching techniques help to loosen tight muscles, and enhance joint mobility and range of motion. Other techniques will be used as determined by your therapist.

“I have known Brenda for over 10 years, and she has made me a true believer in the power of Shiatsu . I travel to Coquitlam from North Vancouver to see her, and with every treatment I feel adjusted and aligned, and able to do all of the outdoor activities that I love. In my eyes, Shiatsu is not just a physical practice, but also allows you to connect with your own body on many levels. Thank you Brenda, for your caring and sharing!”
